Non Roster Invitees – Pitchers

Here is a list of guys that you are going to hear something about during spring training, and names you should remember for the future. So, get to know these names, people!

Pitchers:

1. Joe Beimel (L) – Beimel is no stranger to pitching in the major leagues, and he is no rookie. Beimel, a left handed pitcher, has pitched in 567 games at the major league level. Of those 567 games, he has only started 23, which came in 2001 and 2002, while he was a member of the Pirates. His overall ERA is 4.21, but he had a great run from 2006 until 2010, with a combined ERA of 3.17 during that time. He had an ERA of 5.33 for the Pitsburg in 2011, and he only  got into 35 games. He is another one of those guys that the Rangers are willing to look at and see if they can find a diamond in the rough. We will see what kind of spring he has, but it is going to be hard to crack into this bull pen for 2012.

2. Sean Green (R) – Green is another veteran that the Rangers signed to a minor league deal. His career began in 2006 with Seattle. He has pitched in 264 games, all as a reliever. He has a career ERA of 4.41. He last pitched for the Brewers, getting into to only 14 games at the big league level. This is a guy that the Rangers really just want to have a look at, in my opinion.

 3. Fabio Castillo (R) – Castillo has been in the Rangers organization since 2006. He has pitched in 179 games in his minor league career. His career minor league ERA is 4.63 (6.27 at the AA level). The Rangers are just wanting to take a look at this young man. I would not put him on your radar just yet as a guy who can make the team this year.

4. Mitch Stetter (R) – In the spirit of getting guys who played for the Brewers last season, there is Mitch Stetter. Stetter has 132 games of service at the major league level, but just 16 in 2011. Stetter has a career ERA of 4.08. The Rangers are looking to see if he has anything worth developing to make him an asset in the future, but I would not look for Stetter to be a factor in 2012.

5. Ben Snyder (L) – Snyder is a prospect that you may want to keep your eyes on. Snyder has a career minor league ERA of 3.34 (3.81 at the AA level) and in 684 innings pitched, he has 565 strikeouts to only 191 walks. He averages 7.4 strikeouts per 9 innings. Snyder has been in the Rangers system since 2006, and he is looking like a guy who may be ready to make the jump at some point during the 2012 season. It will all depend on what kind of spring that he has.

6. Greg Reynolds (R) – Reynolds has been a part of 2 season in the majors, both for the Rockies. He has only pitched in 27 games at the major league level, starting 18 of those. A very short sample indeed. It didn’t go well for him. He is 5-8 with a 7.47 ERA. In the minors he has spent 6 seasons. He is 21-18 with a 4.70 ERA (11-7 with a 3.85 ERA at AA and 7-10 with a 5.99 at AAA). The Rangers are just interested in seeing what is there at this time. I would not be so sure that he will even break camp in the Rangers organization, but we will get to see a little of him in the next few weeks.

7. Tanner Scheppers (R) – Scheppers is a name that we have all heard. He has been in the minors now for 3 seasons, and he has posted and ERA of 4.29 in those 3 seasons. At the AAA level, his ERA is 5.22 and his WHIP is 1.639. Tanner is a guy that the Rangers have been working hard on developing so that he can make it to the show, most Rangers fans have heard of him. He has 41 games under his belt at the AAA level. His numbers are not impressive yet, but I would not be surprised if Tanner had a big year in Round Rock and the Rangers called him up at some point during this season.

8. Robert Ross (L) – Ross is young, the youngest guy on this list. He has pitched in 69 games total, but he has only pitched six games at the AA level to this point. In that short sample he has an ERA of 2.88, he has 321 strikeouts and only 87 bb. I think it is going to be very interesting to watch Ross develop and see what he can turn into for the Rangers. My feeling is that he will start the season in AA ball and probably move up to AAA at some point. We should see a good bit of Ross in spring training.
