First to Fifty

The Texas Rangers defeated the New York Yankees this morning 9-6 in a very crazy, often rain delayed game that ended around 2 in the morning central time. The Yankees took a 6-4 lead late, and took it into the ninth inning, where Joe Girardi decided for the umpires that it was raining too hard to continue playing with only 3 outs left to get. It, of course, had nothing to do with that fact that his closer was struggling to get a strike over the plate.

So they delayed, and much to the dismay of the Yankees, the umpires decided the game would be finished. So it was, and the Texas Rangers, as they have done so many times already this season, came from a 2 run deficit and won the game by 3.

That made the Texas Rangers record 50-27. Fifty wins, and it is not even July yet. With all of the well documented injuries that the Rangers have had in 2016, it is quite amazing that they now lead the majors in wins. They have done it with a plethora of young talent leading the was as well. Nomar Mazara, Rougned Odor, Jurickson Profar, Elvis Andrus, Ryan Rua, Nick Martinez, Chi Chi Gonzalez among others are playing roles on this team that just keeps winning.

According to Baseball Reference, the Rangers have a team ERA of 4.00, which is good for 5th in the American League. They are 5th in runs allowed per game, They are last in strikeouts, have allowed the fourth most walks, and are dead center of the league in WHIP. So how are they doing it, winning so many games?

On the offensive side they are fifth in batting average, seventh in home runs hit, second in RBI, and they have taken the third fewest walks in the majors. The numbers just don’t seem to add up, but then here we are, with the Texas Rangers at fifty wins.

Last nights game was enjoyable, but I do hope that they can finish in a more timely fashion tonight, I am not sure I can stay awake that long every night.
