Rangers Positions: First Base

The Rangers used a variety of players at first base in 2017, including Joey Gallo, Jurickson Profar, Ryan Rua, Drew Robinson and others. The point is, the Rangers do not have an everyday first baseman right now. Profar and Gallo both looked very good there. Ronald Guzman is an up and coming first baseman. The question this off season is, should the Rangers pursue a first baseman or continue by comittee until Guzman is ready?

Comittee is good by me. I want to see the bats of Gallo, Rua and Profar (if they don’t trade him) in the lineup, and if a first base platoon is what it takes to get them in the mix, then so be it. The Profar situation is interesting, and I don’t know if he even wants to play here again. Rua was good last season when he got into games, and Gallo will always be Gallo. Lots of long balls, lots of strike outs. The point is, I think the Rangers have the corner covered now and in the future. It looks like it could be an offensive strong point for the Rangers in 2018.

Since Mark Texieria was traded, the Rangers really have not had a consistant starting first baeman. They have rotated guys in and out, guys like Justin Smoak, Chris Davis, Mitch Moreland, Prince Fielder and others. It worked in 2010 and 2011, and I believe that it will work in 2018 as well. First base is in good hands, allbeit a lot of different hands!
