The Year of Colby Lewis

Safe to say, Colby Lewis is having a pretty good season so far in 2016. Colby, or Cobra as his nickname goes, has a career ERA of 4.70, but inTexas Rangers colby lewis twelve starts os far in 2016, he is 5-0 with an ERA of 3.20. On a staff including Cole Hamels, Yu Darvish and Derek Holland, I don’t think many Texas Rangers fans expected the best starter of the season through the first third to be Colby Lewis.

Lewis is tied with Hamels for the most innings pitched so far, he has the lowest ERA among the active starters (A.J. Griffin has a lower one, but he is on the DL), the second most strike outs, the second least walks and he has a whip of 1.16.

“I feel healthy, my knee feels good, I’m just feeling good out there.” Lewis says. “I have been throwing all my pitches for strikes, keeping guys off balance, moving the ball around, just doing what I need to do to continue to keep our team in there. That’s about it.” texasrangers.com

So can the grizzled veteran keep up his great numbers in 2016? Only time will tell, but this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as he did win 15 games in 2015. If nothing else he has been a huge boost to this team so far in the first third of the season. He looks healthier, leaner and he seems to be throwing the ball the best I can remember in his career. I just wonder if being left out of the post season rotation in 2015 gave him some motivation to really pitch his best this season.

While I don’t think Colby Lewis will go undefeated in 2016, I do see him winning at least 15 games again. And I think that Texas Rangers fans will take a 15 win season from Colby Lewis every year. To me it is pretty cool that he is the first player ever to return to pitching after having the type of hip surgery that he went through, and I think he is proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Lewis will try to continue his winning ways Saturday against the Mariners in Seattle.
