Staying the Course

The Texas Rangers are 48-42 at the All-Star break. They had three all-stars. Houston is only nine games ahead of them. I saw a lot of predictions saying this team could lose one-hundred games. I had them losing ninety-five games myself. Instead of dreadful, the team has been fun to watch. Mike Minor is having a career year. Hunter Pence could be the comeback player of the year. Joey Gallo is striking out less. Oh, and all three of those guys were All-Stars.

Everyone told us that the Rangers were in a rebuilding year. So should the Rangers stay the course, or go all in this season? My answer is that they should stay the course. Here is why.

The Texas Rangers are average in 2019. They were supposed to be bad, but are not. Average is not going to win you a World Series. The average ERA in the American League is 4.55, the Rangers ERA is 4.82. Average runs allowed is 405, the Rangers have allowed 430. Home-runs allowed? 128. Texas has allowed 128. Walks the average is 294 and the Rangers have walked 313. Everything down the list is below average.

When it comes to hitting, some categories are better. The have scored 485 runs, which is fourth best in the American League. They are exactly average on home-runs at 125, they have walked above league average, and they have a batting average above the middle of the pack. But offense does not win championships in my experience.

Now this is just my opinion, but I think the Rangers should stay the course. Do not become buyers just because you are six games over .500. Players like Mike Minor, Asdrubal Cabrera, Danny Santana, Jesse Chavez, Shin-Soo Choo and others can bring you a haul of young talent. Trade them. Rebuild the team. Continue the plan to improve the minor league system. Is it worth trying to win now? The best this team can do is maybe, maybe make the wild card and lose. The fans and the team cannot overreact to a decent first half. Stay the course.

I have enjoyed watching the product on the field in 2019, but I will not be happy if they trade more pieces away to try and win this year. This team is not ready. They’re just not. Am I wrong? Let me know in the comment section down below or on Facebook or Twitter.
