The Greatest Ranger Round of 8 Part 1

The greatest Rangers is now down to the final eight. For me, it has been a real joy to put this whole thing together and watch it go. Learning how Rangers fans feel about some players was eye opening in some cases, and expected in others. Two surprises in the round of 16 for me were that Kenny Rogers didn’t get more votes, and Elvis Andrus losing to Rusty Greer.

We are at the final eight. Voting difficulty level is now high. Decisions now will remove a beloved player. Each one of the remaining candidates are fan favorites and Rangers greats. I want to take a more in depth look at the remaining eight players. Hopefully it will help you make a decision on who should make it to the final four.

Nolan Ryan vs Fergie Jenkins

Ryan was 51-39 with a 3.43 ERA with 939 strike outs in his time with the Texas Rangers. He also threw his 6th and 7th no hitters. Ryan is a beloved Rangers player and for a while was also a beloved owner and president of baseball operations. He is truly one of peoples favorites.

Jenkins had two stints with Texas lasting a total of 6 years. While with Texas he had an ERA of 5.64 and a record of 90-72. He struck out 895 batters. Jenkins was a great pitcher for the Rangers in the late 70’s into the early 80’s. He is someone that more seasoned Rangers fans really love.

Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez vs Rafael Palmeiro

Pudge played 13 seasons in Texas, and had a slash line of .304/.341/.488. A hall of famer, he is one of the greatest catchers of all time. He was a part of the Rangers first playoff run. To say Pudge is a fan favorite would be a massive understatement. He is still beloved today and is still involved with the organization.

Palmeiro had two stints with the Rangers for ten season. He hit 321 homers while a Ranger, and he also had over 1k RBI, but is best known for shaking his finger at congress. He and Pudge are both tied to steroids, but Palmeiro seems to get more flak for it.
