Forty Man Friday

Today I am starting a series called “Forty Man Friday”. We are going to take a look at the players on the forty man roster, minor and major, and tell you a little more about them. We will begin with the highest ranked prospect on the forty man roster, Sam Huff.

Now Huff was born in 1998. He played baseball in high school for the Arcadia Titans. Huff is a catcher/first baseman who was drafted by the Rangers in the seventh round of the 2016 draft (Pick 219). Huff was committed to Grand Canyon University.

Professional Career

Huff then began his career in the Arizona Rangers in the rookie level Arizona league. He was able to hit .330/.436/.485/.921 with 1 home run and 17 RBI in 2016 and he slashed .249/.329/.452/.781 with 9 home runs and 31 RBI in 2017. (wikipedia). He moved on to the Hickory Crawdads in 2018,  hitting .241/.292/.439/.731 with 18 home runs and 55 RBI. Huff then spent 2019 with Hickory and The Down East Wood Ducks. He was named an All-Star and played in the future game, hitting a home run to tie the game off Ben Bowden. Huff was also named an All-Star at seasons end.

In September of 2020, Huff was first called up to the Rangers in the COVID shortened season. He fared well in his ten games, slashing 355/.394/.742/1.136 with 3 home runs and 4 RBI. The Rangers and their fans were getting excited about the possibility of Sam Huff, but surgery stalled his 2021. Huff had surgery to repair a loose body in his knee, and was placed on the 60 day IL.

He then was activated from the IL on July 17, and began playing for the Frisco RoughRiders. He hit a couple of monster shots that were pretty amazing including this one. Huff played a good amount and first base and designated hitter, saving his knee.

So Huff is the Rangers number five prospect. If you would like to know more about him, tune into the Texas Rangers Baseball Podcast with Jeff Wilson and John Moore. We’ll try to look at different forty man roster players every Friday so you can get to know the future Rangers!
